Technique The Alexander Technique takes its name from Tasmanian actor Frederick Mathias Alexander who devised a way of using posture and co-ordination to relieve the symptoms of physical stress and tension on our bodies. It seeks to help people regain natural control and poise over their systems of balance. Simply stated - to reorientate the way heads sit on shoulders. As that control becomes less efficient with age, or the unhealthy reaction to stressful situations, we become unbalanced and more and more effort is required to hold our bodies erect against the forces of gravity. The habits of misuse we develop puts pressure on our skeletal and musculature system which can cause chronic pain, postural problems, breathing disorders, affecting our circulation and our general health and well being. Alexander found that excess tension surrounding the head neck area blocks important information from being received by the movement receptors in our muscles so our responses may be inappropriate, we may overuse some muscles and underuse others. When we let go of unnecessary tension, which is what you learn to do in a particular way in an Alexander lesson, our postural reflexes are free to operate and an experience of ease and freedom of our bodies during movement can be experienced
