LESSONS

Lessons are generally 40-45 minutes long. Dressed in comfortable clothing, the student is guided in simple activities such as sitting, walking or talking while learning to notice and change the harmful patterns of habit that can cause pain or reduce effectiveness. Part of the lesson takes place lying on a table where habitual tensions are more easily released.

The Alexander Technique is not bodywork, nor is it a relaxation technique or a series of exercises, it is a method of education that requires close participation by the student. The teacher uses gentle hands-on guidance along with visual and verbal direction to help the student discover easier, more effective ways of moving in a co-ordinated way, teaching the basic principles for changing our automatic behaviours into consciously chosen responses.

The work leads to an integration of your whole self on a physical, mental and emotional level, changing your response patterns and improving the quality of your movement.
Private lessons are the traditional method of learning the Alexander Technique. There is no set course, you book and pay as you go. During your first lesson your needs and situation will be discussed and frequency of visits recommended.

As with learning to drive a car, play golf or a musical instrument, you can learn the theory from a book, however to get the subjective kinaesthetic understanding on a personal level you need to be guided by an experienced teacher. This is best achieved by working one on one with a teacher who is certified by the Alexander Technique Society and has completed a full 3 year training course.
